(NOTE: I'm not gonna finish the last note I began writing because, frankly... I dunno. I just don't want to. Anyway... LISTEN UP!)

LISTEN UP IF YOU HAVE MADE AN OC FOR HETALIA!
I've got some favors to ask.

1)PLEASE GOT TAKE A MARY SUE TEST FOR YOUR CHARACTER. Please. Seriously. I've run into a lot of Sues, though I'm glad to also find non-sues. So, seriously. GO FREAKING TAKE A MARY-SUE TEST RIGHT NOW.

2) WHEN DRAWING YOUR CHARACTER: I don't care if you're a crappy illustrator or not, PUT EFFORT INTO IT! Seriously, I've found some OC's on facebook that are so badly drawn I didn't even know it was a person, and the admin was all like "oh i just didn't want to work too long on it". I mentally slapped this person!

3) WHEN DESIGNING YOUR HETALIA CHARACTER (part one): I have found some OC's for other countries that have completely western (Americanized) names. Once I even found a Mongolia with the name "Robert Stevens". The page is gone now, but seriously! WHAT THE HECK!? Anyway...

4) WHEN DESINGING YOUR HETALIA CHARACTER (part two): If you have noticed, all the canon Hetalia characters in existence have specialized clothing. This is either a military uniform for the country, a traditional outfit from said country, or something people from country may wear often or have worn in the past.

Examples of this include:
England, Japan, Germany, Italy, China, Bulgaria, Canada, Poland, Prussia, Switzerland Spain, Romano, the Nordics, the Baltics, etc - these characters wear military uniforms, and it's fairly obvious that they do. (Is France in a military uniform? I haven't taken the time to look.)

Austria, Hungary, Belarus, Ukraine, Belgium, Chibitalia, Chibiromano, etc. - these characters wear traditional outfits and/or outfits from the past. EX: Austria in his long coat and fluffy scarf thing, Hungary in her dress (which she also dresses Italy in),  Belgium in her dress, etc.

America wears, over his military uniform, an airforce-looking-jacket with the star on it. Russia has a long coat and scarf because it's cold, and also has a soviet medal.

You should at least TRY to look up traditional and/or military clothing for the country you're designing. (NOTE: If your OC is a state for America or another country, this may not apply to you. Unless you have an Alaska with an Inuit (aka Eskimo, in case some of you are confused (and/or ignorant) parka, or a Texas with a cowboy/girl outfit, or a previosuly-confederate state with a confederate outfit on.)

So SERIOUSLY. I was looking at other Slovakia OCs and one was wearing completely American clothing. Again with the Robert Stevens Mongolia thing. My friend :iconmeiwatashi: and I have given at least an attempt with our OCs.

I'm part Cherokee, so I've learned about my heritage, so I knew I had to give a Cherokee name like "Ahyoka Sixkiller" to her and she had to be wearing Native American clothing (though it looks semi-white-manish clothing because the Cherokees tried to embrace the white man's culture to become accepted. Long story.)

My OC for Slovakia at least HAS a Slovakian name and is wears traditional Slovakian kroje. (That's the right term for it, I hope. I think kroj is singular, and kroje is plural, right? I dunno.)

My OC for Oklahoma has the last name Bonnefoy-Jones BECAUSE America was given the Oklahoma territory in the Louisiana Purchase, from FRANCE. Her name is Alva because that's a small town in OK, but I won't criticize you if you don't have a state OC named after a small town. She wears American clothing.

5) LET'S GET REAL HERE, PEOPLE. I've seen OC's for Antarctica, the Atlantic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, all sorts of bodies of water. I can see Antarctica maybe wearing a parka because it's SUPER FREAKING COLD and/or a lab coat because the only people there are scientists. But the oceans? No. Sorry to be hatin, guys, but having an OC for an ocean/river/bay/lake/stream/sea/gulf/strait/whateverotherbodyofwater isn't exactly... plausible. There are no people who live in the ocean, so how would you create a personality for an ocean? Decide the name? Choose a wardrobe? Sigh.

Anyway, that's all.

So, seriously. I've said that a lot. I say "seriously" a lot. I seriously need to think of a new word. Seriously. Anyway, yeah. Take into account the heritage and history of a country/region before making a Hetalia character for it.

I'm done ranting. Feel free to comment.

MARY SURE CHECK if that's ok... i made an oc for florida. history: around the time florida was first inhabited, when a tribe of paleo-indians found her as a little girl, they named her devagana, and there she learned how to fend for herself. when spain discovered and technically claimed florida for his own, the name adelina was given to her. her left foot was scalded durring the attack of st augustine, and still slightly is, she was also injured during the first seminole war, which was around the time america took her in and gave her the name sylvia. she usually just wears a white t-shirt and jeans, with a light brown cardigan spain gave her. she's usually relatively sweet, but does have a bit of a temper, and she can sometimes be clumsy. she's not that much of an outgoing person, and is really shy. she's good at gardening/growing plants, fruit, ect (because of her being the place where 80% of america's citrus come from, and from when pasce de leon found her, he gave her the nickname pascua florida, meaning feast of flowers) and she has a pet lizard named ani. and she is nothing like me at all. mary sue or no? the test i took said it was ok, but i want your opinion.

I wonder, what is your opinion on people who make up their own countries?
I made my own country up for my OC because I had figured out a name but no country seemed to fit her so I made my own. I have the history historically accurate and I found a picture online since I can't draw that well on computers or tablets. If you could, would you mind reviewing my OC sometime?

Making up your own country is fine! As long as the country isn't a Mary sue character and the history makes sense within the geographical region you've put it in.
As for not drawing well, I understand. Not everyone can draw on a computer! However I definitely should say you should use your own art or someone else's requested or commissioned art and not just an online picture, as that art belongs to somebody else.
And I will also say this: you took the correct route in creating a 'new country' for your OC rather than assigning a real country that doesn't have a canon design and sticking your OC's personality on it. I cannot stand that because it is disrespectful to the nation the character has been slapped on to. This is because the character wasn't designed for the nation and will probably not display the correct aspects of the nation's culture and attitude towards other nations. Anyone who does this automatically has not created the correct kind of Hetalia OC. So, props on just making your own nation. XD
I wouldn't mind! Though I gotta be honest, I will probably be very blunt with my review.

I do not mind blunt criticism and I mainly want observations so I can make it so my OC is not a Mary-Sue which I believe she is not. Is there a lay out you have that I could use for the review?

I'll be honest, here... this doesn't sound like a very well thought-out OC. With work it could be a good one, but I'm a little confused. Knowing the name of the place you're making an OC for is definitely a priority, it should probably be the number-one priority. Also, the 2p version of a Spanish OC would still be Spanish, and not German... much like 2p!Italy is not Swedish, for example. Also, out of curiosity, what sort of cultural relations do your OCs have with Germany to warrant their affections and heartbreak?

I just made an Alaska OC, and I have a question. Although I have found some names which sound traditionally Alaskan, my research says that Alaskans actually use American-sounding names. I'm stuck, I named her Alexis Smith but now I'm not so sure....

For a state I would go ahead and give her an American-sounding name, as Alaska is now part of the united states. When you make the OC's profile, explain that when she was younger she went by a different, more native sounding name. Alexis sounds like a fine name for a state! :) As for the last name, why Smith? Why not Jones?

And I was kind of thinking about the last name, should I change it to Jones?

Since she's a state I would probably change it to Jones. If you wanted to get official it could be Williams-Jones or Braginsky-Jones, depending on when in her history you're referring to and who had ownership over the territory at the time.

I've got it,

Before anything, when just the former Natives lived there and she was probably still young, her name was Hinshlai' and her village name was Evette.

During the time when Russia owned her, the name Viktoriya was forced on her.

And finally, when America took her he named her Alexis.

Hey there~ I'm currently creating an OC for the Republic of Macedonia and I have this folder on my computer that isis just full of bookmarked webpages with information on it. :b Anyway, I just noticed the little comment about France's military uniform and felt the need to say that he is actually in the french WW1 uniform, which is strange since the others wear their WW2 uniforms. I know it's not a country, but I made one for Maine, since its my home state and I love it there. :3 It's the first OC I've ever made for anything, but I don't think she's too bad - I really tried to make her as accurate as possible, and I worked really hard on the drawing. It actually took a little research, and I lived there for almost fifteen years! XP

If you did your research and actually know about the state, then that's definitely a plus and I'm sure your OC is fine! And I think it's perfectly acceptable to make an OC for something that isn't a country. I mean Himaruya makes characters for regions and such! So why not! :D

That is an EPIC idea. A very good idea. The events that happen to your OC's nation are very important because these help develop the character of your country. Knowing how the population responds also helps shape who your country is and what their attitude is. It's a good way to keep your OC in check - is the OC fitting the nation's attitude. :D

Um, Do Hetalia Oc's HAVE to be countries. Can they just be from a certain country ad have a name from that country. Also, Can i make the Oc they way i planed, i mean i wanted my Oc to look a certain way, and sometimes wear a military outfit from his/Her home country. I also wasn't sure to let me Oc have dyed hair, i wanted him/her to dye the tips of their air a certain color. It's just sort of confusing to me. I want my Oc to be good, but i also want him/her to reflect my creativty. Help? Thanks!

Typically a Hetalia OC needs to be a county, state, province, region, things like that. Or you can make a Hetalia design for a historical figure like Himaruya did with Maria Theresa and Old Fritz. Having just someone from a country is just more or less an original character and not necessarily Hetalia.

The thing about an OC having dyed hair of any sort is that nobody in Hetalia has hair like that. Yes, you wan to be creative, bu you also have to stay within preset lines or people won't even look twice at your character.

From what it sounds like it seems like you've just got a character you came up with and isn't really a Hetalia character. What you have to ask yourself is, would it be unusual to see this charactef in the manga or the anime? Especially alongside other characters?

While you can throw in a character you created into Hetalia as a crossover sort of thing, you can't call them a Hetalia OC if they aren't representing something or if they aren't a historical figure.

I understand wanting to express creativity! :D but with a Hetalia OC when compared to your own characters, you use creativity by coming up with fun ways for them to act and look based on the stereotypes of the country/region/etc you're basing them off of. :)

Happy to answer your questions! :D

A mary sue is "A fictional character, usually female and especially in fanfic, whose implausible talents and likeableness weaken the story."

I couldn't explain it any better! Here's the thing about Mary Sue's. They are very easy to make, even unintentionally. If you want to find out if your character is a mary sue, google the Mary sue litmus test, there's a couple out there that are very reliable.
